Study: men more likely to receive training (and get a pay rise afterwards)

New research has found that in Europe, men are more likely to be offered employee training than their female counterparts. The study concluded that eight in ten men were given training opportunities, compared to six in ten women. This raises a number of questions, but is it an example of how unconscious bias can manifest in the workplace, or simply a matter of who works more?

The alarming, albeit unsurprising trend was uncovered by The Knowledge Academy. The global training company evaluated data from Eurostat, the EU's statistical office, as well as results from a study spearheaded by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills and the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE).

Researchers ascertained that the results were due to the number of women in part-time work, with those returning after having children most affected. This is in part true, as 44% of women across the countries examined did have part-time roles, in comparison to 13% of men. This is echoed in later findings; 32% of full-time staff stated that they had been given both on- and off-the-job training in the last year, whereas 19% of part-time workers said the same.

However, even in instances where both genders were offered the same training opportunities, men were still more likely to be given a pay rise afterwards. Researchers even found that the course content is often gendered, with women ironically being offered courses on equality, diversity and health and safety, while men received training in managerial skills like leadership.

It is clear that there are still many miles to go to when it comes to achieving equality in the workplace. Training may be one small aspect of the wider issue, but it's paramount to career progression and without it, even the best employee's productivity will start to wane.

If employers want to get the most out of their existing staff and attract the best talent, they must offer equal training opportunities to all employees and make a conscious effort to make their business a fairer place.
